Cotoneaster Cornubia Watereri

Showy red berries in autumn cotoneaster cornubia is a medium sized vigorous tree producing clusters of bright red fruits in autumn which stay on the plant for a considerable time. Cotoneaster frigidus cornubia is one of the largest cotoneasters often forming an enormous bushy shrub but it can easily be trained into a standard to make a handsome tree with graceful branches that bend beneath the weight of fruit.

Details cornubia is a large semi evergreen shrub to 6m rounded and compact in growth with elliptic dark green leaves to 12cm in length. This tree was bred in exbury gardens around 1930. It is listed as both cotoneaster frigidus cornubia and cotoneaster x watereri cornubia.

Cotoneaster trees are distantly related to apples and the fruits are edible though not wildly tasty. Flowering is spectacular the white open booms clustered densely in flattened heads while the berries which follow are among the largest in the genus pea size and a conspicuous shade of vivid red in autumn and all winter.
