They can tolerate partial shade so you can plant them in a yard with larger trees or at the edge of a woodland and they ll still get enough light.
Like many serviceberries this species provides color interest throughout several seasons. Abundant white blooms in spring are followed by delicious berries in summer fiery foliage in fall and silver bark in winter. They need moist well drained acidic soil but they tolerate a wide range of soils.
The fruit is usually eaten very quickly by birds. In autumn the leaves change to red orange and yellow. In the spring the tree is covered with short lived but beautiful white blossoms.
