Evergreen huckleberry is a hardy shrub that is native of the california on up to the british columbia region. It grows commonly in the shade of big forest conifers but also in the open in sandy beach soils. Upright branches are densely covered with leathery toothed evergreen leaves and small white pink urn shaped flowers emerge in spring. The evergreen huckleberry is found in clearings and on the margins of evergreen forests from the western slopes of the cascades to the pacific ocean.

Leaves small alternate oval to lanceolate 4 cm long toothed leathery glossy dark green generally closely spaced along reddish stems. Description evergreen huckleberry is a prized addition to any northwest native landscape with its little urn shaped flowers perennial leaves and glossy blackish purple berries. The fruit is so small that it takes a good sized portion to make jam jelly or syrup but it is worth the effort for their sweet fresh flavor.

Beautiful foliage and edible fruit make this a must in most gardens. Does not transplant well but can be grown easily from smaller. Along the coast of california it is common to the redwoods but sporadic further south.
